Are you a thrill-seeker in need of some adventure? Colorado Springs is a ridiculously good-looking mountain city with so much to offer. I’ve been twice in the last year, and I always leave wanting more! Here’s my take on the best activities in this lively destination.

Colorado Springs

1. Pikes Peak Summit

It goes without saying that Pikes Peak should be at the top of your to-do list. Your first order of business is deciding what mode of transportation you prefer on your elevation journey to 14,115 feet! Here are your options:

Car – The scenic ride takes about an hour each way and gives you multiple opportunities to stop and admire the natural beauty, as well as snap some gorgeous pictures.

The Cog Railway –  If driving up and down winding mountain roads isn’t your thing, I would look into The Cog Railway. The trip is about 3 hours and you’re allowed 30 to 40 minutes at the top of Pikes Peak. Be sure to book in advance!

13.5 Mile Hike –  If you’re an avid hiker and want to test your limits, the 13.5 mile hike to the top is right up your alley.

Regardless of the transportation choice you make, you’ll be overwhelmed by the picturesque scene once you finally make it to the summit of Pikes Peak!

2. Garden of the Gods Park

This National Natural Landmark is truly a spectacular sight. If you’re short on time, you can drive through Garden of the Gods and check out the massive sandstone rock formations from a distance. However, I highly recommend hiking the trails to get the full experience. You might even witness some risk-takers climbing the stunning red rocks.

3. Seven Falls

I mean, who doesn’t love waterfalls? Chasing them (cue TLC), swimming in them and admiring from afar. Seven Falls is located right next to The Broadmoor and will surely be a treat for your eyes.

4. The Broadmoor Hotel

Oh my goodness — The Broadmoor! I was absolutely blown away the second I walked in the door. Everything is beyond exquisite, and it’s a superb place to roam and have some lunch if you’re in need of a low-key afternoon.

5. Old Colorado City

Full of restaurants and shops on the west side of town, Old Colorado City is the perfect location for some leisurely entertainment. Be sure to soak up loads of history as you explore the first capital of the Territory of Colorado.

6. Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs oozes charm. I could stroll through this little town and its quaint shops over and over again. Its close proximity to Pikes Peak makes it the perfect pit stop before or after your trip up the mountain. Check out the cliff dwellings, mineral springs and my personal favorite — the vintage arcade — for a blast from the past!

7. Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Red Rock Canyon is 789 acres of open space waiting for pedestrians, bikers, leashed dogs, horses and rock climbers. Excellent for those who can’t get enough of the outdoors!

8. Cave of the Winds

Traveling with kids? Not to worry! Cave of the Winds is a fantastic win-win situation for everyone. Tour the historic caves or take advantage of the outdoor attractions for all ages. If you’re brave enough, adults and children over 48″ can ride the Terror-dactyl, which is the first ride of its kind. A 200-foot drop into a canyon at speeds of over 100 mph! Watch the craziness here!

9. Ivywild School aka Bristol Brewing Company

Ready to unwind from a fun-filled day and throw back a few? Head to this elementary school turned brewery for some delicious food and beverages. The bathrooms are still adorned with original paintings, and you can grab a drink in the principal’s office! Don’t believe me? Click here for more details.

10. Hot Air Balloon Ride over Colorado Springs

At the end of my vacation, I was killing time at the airport and I noticed several hot air balloons soaring over the mountains. If I knew prior to my trip that Colorado Springs offered this legendary experience, I wouldn’t have passed up the opportunity.  Riding in a hot air balloon has been on my bucket list for a LONG time, and The Springs is definitely a solid place to do it!

Needless to say, there is no shortage of activities for folks who just want to explore the outdoors or let out the adventurous daredevil inside. Colorado Springs is perfect for stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new! What will you add to your Colorado Springs to-do list?
